Sports Update

GISAC High School Volleyball

Our 1st round of fixtures came after two practice sessions, which did nit leave much time for preparation, but I must say that I was overwhelmed by the character and spirit on display by the students.

It would have been easy for both the boys and girls teams to let their heads drop, give up and hand the victory to their opponents, but they did not let that happen. They rallied back, sometimes from 10 point deficits to ensure that their opponents had to earn every point and in the end, their victory.

If this is what can be achieved after two sessions, l can only look forward with optimism.

Next fixture: 06/09 v UISG

Middle School had their first Football training session led by the school’s very own ‘José Mourinho’ Mr Riviera. It is fantastic that we currently have Primary, Middle and High School Student’s participating in sports training programs and staying active. Long may it continue.

If you require any further information regarding sports, late buses or the seasonal flexiboarding program please feel free to contact me.

Student reports

This was the first time I had ever participate in a volleyball match. We played against ISD. They had good tactics and game understanding, they had a lot of time to practice, they may be more experienced than us. Although we lost, we still felt satisfied, because we encouraged each other, we worked together and every round of the game the coach always supported us, never letting us be discouraged I think we have to practice harder and develop our skills passing and serving. The other team used the overhead serve and it was effective. I think if we can all learn this, it will better for the team. I also, think getting some kneepads would allow use to be more brave a and dive for the ball!

The UISZ Cobra’s finished  their volleyball match, demonstrating the power of a ‘no quit attitude.’ The girl’s team lost their game in 3 sets against ISD, with the boys lost 3 sets, but all of the games were very close. A big thank you to the coach of the girls team (Mr. Nelson) for his amazing influence and skill and our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Grant, who has coached, motivated and inspired our students during this first part of our Cobra sport teams program.  It’s the beginning of the year, lots of new students have joined the volleyball team and it’s good to see this phenomenon because, while we work hard to be the best we can possibly be academically, we also value other dimensions of learning.

The ‘Utahloy Way’ places equal importance on social, emotional, physical and creative aspects of ourselves. The CCA and Sports program give us many opportunities to achieve this philosophy, with our community participating in various activities each Tuesday and Thursday.  This week students used our beautiful campus to full effect, spending time on  volleyball, so the sports programs give us many opportunities to achieve this.
